Medal of Honor awarded to living veteranMedal of Honor

WASHINGTON (AP) — The first living service member from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars to receive the Medal of Honor says the award honors more than a dozen fellow soldiers who were in a deadly ambush three years ago.

Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, in an interview with The Associated Press on Saturday, said of his heroics in Afghanistan that — in his words — "it was not me doing everything."

The Army says the 25-year-old soldier exposed himself to enemy gunfire to try to save two fellow soldiers. He becomes the eighth service member to receive the Medal of Honor during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The seven previous medals were awarded posthumously. He said he learned of the honor in a phone call from President Barack Obama on Thursday.
